System Features

Optical Drives

A CD-ROM drive is now a standard feature in all computers. Make sure you're getting at least a 40X CD-ROM read speed. An additional consideration these days would be whether you want read-write capability - many computers now come with CD-RW drives. DVD-ROM drives are also being bundled in desktops. Even better, some come with DVD-RW drives which will save you the cost of buying a separate DVD writer later on.

Monitors

I guess the key consideration here is whether you want a CRT or LCD display. My opinion is to go for at least a 17 inch monitor if you want a CRT display, and at least a 15 inch monitor for LCD displays. Good brand names here are: NEC, Samsung and ViewSonic.

Graphics

Computer systems come with either integrated video on the motherboard, or a physical video card. If you play a lot of games, especially 3D games like Half-Life 2, you will not want to rely on integrated video. Make sure the system has a physical video card with at least AGP 8X and 256 MB of video memory.

Sound

Again, it is common for computers to come with integrated sound on the motherboard these days. However, if you're a computer audio buff, go for a separate third-party sound card like the Creative Audigy Sound Card.

Ports

USB ports are almost standard features in desktop computer systems today. In fact, you'll want to check that the system comes with support for the latest USB 2.0 specification. Even better if it comes with FireWire ports (which are essential for video capture and editing).

Operating System
Operating System
The majority of computer systems these days ship with Windows XP Home Edition, which is suitable for home users. Business users should look for Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional to be bundled in the package.

Technical Support

It includes a DVD+/- RW drive, in-built audio / video, Firewire support, as well as a LAN adapter. A really powerful machine.

Slow Computer? Tell me - How Slow Can It Go?

I'll tell you this - I've had some SLOW computers. My first computer was a Gateway 4DX2-66 with something like 22 MB of Ram - that was an upgrade! I know... that's slow enough then I put that computer online. Before taking that machine online, I was able to keep it moving with weekly defrag sessions. Not particularly tech savvy, I thought it was dial-up that slowing everything down to a crawl. When I heard people say "Oh, my computer is slow" I silently argued with them that they had no idea what a slow computer was unless they used mine.

It wasn't until I learn about spyware and adware that existed online that I realized my computer wasn't slow just to aggravate me. It was like a cat covered with fleas during a heat wave. Just didn't want to move.:-)

First things first - I learned how to clear the cookies from my system. That was basic enough - with Microsoft, find accessories then system tools disk clean up to clear a chunk of adware on your machine. Adware cookies slow your computer down because these little critters are busy sending back information about you and your online habits to their home base. You see when you visit a website, cookies are used to track visitors but some cookies do more than simply record who is on their site - through adware and spyware... they can track all kinds of personal information about you and your computer. Harmless? Who knows!

Even if you don't have banking or personal identification information on your home computer, there is some information that no one wants sent out onto the internet. Since a slow computer is one sign of the presence of adware, spyware and trojans that means you need to run a spyware removal software to find out exactly what IS running on your machine. Once you know what is slowing your computer down, then you can clear it out and set up a program that notifies you that some form of spyware or adware is trying to run on your machine. You can delete these unwanted cookies and programs before they start wrecking havoc with your computer and your life.

Before you call one of your kids to come over to deal with your slow computer by popping in more ram, take the time to run some system checks - check for spyware, adware, trojans, system monitors (particularly malicious programs you want to avoid!) and viruses. Specifications: Gateway may be a relatively new player in the netbook market, but I must say that one of its latest netbook models (the Gateway LT2108u) is a pretty decent machine. It comes with the new Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB hard drive. For graphics, this netbook has an Intel GMA 3150 graphics processor. Then there is the 10.1-inch LED back-lit screen (1024 x 600 resolution) and it also supports HD audio. This netbook model comes with the Windows 7 Starter OS.

Design: It was love at first sight when I first laid eyes on the red Gateway LT2108u. The netbook was mainly black in color except for the red external casing. Instead of having a boring smooth surface, the external lid has some faint patterns that give it an edge. This model measures at 10.17 x 7.28 x 0.99 inches (which is pretty thin even by netbook standards). It weighs in at 2.76 pounds. All in all, it (the red model at least) is easily one of the most stylish and sleek netbooks around!

Features & Performance: The Gateway LT2108u can be considered as an entry-level or mid-range netbook if there such a thing. It has a multi-gesture track pad, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a digital memory card reader and 3 USB ports. However, this model does not come with Bluetooth. This can be solved by using a tiny (and very inexpensive) USB toggle. Like many Gateway computers, the Gateway LT2108u is very affordable. It currently retails for just around 9 per unit.
